Time to Get to That Spring Cleaning List

Spring Plumbing Tips: Top 5 Tips for Cleaning Your Plumbing This Spring

Little Rock PlumberTaking the time at least once a year, especially at spring, to do some preventative maintenance on your plumbing can save you money in the long run.

By not doing these small chores you run the risk of the plumbing becoming damaged and requiring the assistance of your local plumbing company sooner than later.

Here are the top five tips for cleaning your plumbing this spring that will extend the life of your plumbing and save you some money.

1. Flush the Water Heater

The water heater runs more than any other appliance in the home, and it also accumulates the most mineral deposits that can be harmful to the plumbing system.

To remove those contaminants, simply attach any garden hose to the connection on the front of the water heater, then run the other end of the hose to the street. Open the valve and allow time for the entire tank to drain.

2. Clean the Sink Traps

Under each sink in the house is a U shaped elbow pipe that can be removed by hand turning two large nuts. Place a bucket under the elbow to catch any water, then remove and thoroughly clean the trap. If any contaminants are going to get trapped in your plumbing, they usually will get stuck in the traps first.

3. Deodorize the Disposal

Cut up the rinds of a lemon or grapefruit and place inside the garbage disposal. Run the unit for a few seconds, then leave the chopped rinds in the disposal a few hours to help to deodorize the sink. After a few hours, simply run the cold water to flush the remains down the pipes.

4. Clean the Shower Head

The shower head can trap calcium and mineral deposits flowing in your water supply. Carefully remove the shower head and allow it to soak in a bowl of Little Rock Spring Plumbingcleaning solution over night. In the morning you can brush the delicate nozzles with a soft brush to loosen and remove all of the deposits left behind.

5. Organic Drain Cleaner

Purchase an organic drain cleaner at least once a year, preferably at spring when you are doing these other cleaning tips. Pour the solution down a few of the sinks to help reduce contaminants from sticking to the pipes in the system throughout the year.

If the clogs are continuing, call you local plumber in spring to allow them to do a preventative maintenance check on your entire plumbing system.
