Mark Your Calendar for World Water Day

March is here, and spring is just about upon us, and that means another World Water Day is just around the corner as well.

This World Water Day, we invite you to observe this international day of action by paying attention to your water use, by telling friends and family about the importance of water conservation, and by taking steps to help stop the water crisis.

March 22 Is World Water Day

World Water Day is an annual global event, and it takes place every year on March 22. This is a significant international event that was created to tackle the water crisis—which is a global scarcity of clean water—and to encourage people around the world to do their part to help conserve water.

The day of observance was created by the United Nations, who are working with people and governments around the world to ensure that every human has access to clean water by 2030.

This year’s theme: Wastewater.

Getting Involved at Home

Each American typically uses about 100 gallons of water per day (each person can survive on 5), meaning there are plenty of places where we can work together to save water. Around the house, you and your family can take part in World Water Day by reducing the amount of water you use by:

• Using waterless cleaner to wash your cars
• Adopting a mellow yellow policy for the toilet, installing low-flow toilets, or putting full bottles or balloons in the back of each toilet tank
• Not using the toilet to flush food or garbage
• Turning off the water when you’re lathering in the shower, washing your hands or face in the sink, hand washing dishes, and brushing your teeth
• Keeping water that you used to boil pasta or vegetables and using it to make soups and other dishes
• Adjusting the water level settings on the washing machine to match the load size

In the garden: Instead of using freshwater, install a rain barrel to collect rainwater for watering. You can also remove some of your grass, replace thirsty plants with drought-resistant ones, and water plants in the morning and evening to prevent evaporation in the midday sun.

Plumbing system maintenance: Leaks are a huge contributor to water waste, and a large leak or plumbing issue could waste thousands of gallons of water every year. The quick and simple solution to this is to inspect toilets, faucets, pipes, and irrigation regularly for leaks, and call a plumber if you find any. You can also replace your toilets and fixtures with low-flow ones, and insulate hot water pipes, so the hot water gets to your faucets faster.

The Reason for the Need: The Water Crisis

The current world population is about 7.4 billion, and of those people, 663 million live without access to a safe water source nearby. That’s 1 in 10 people! Moreover, 1 in 3 live without a toilet, and 1 in 4 rely on a water source that causes deadly diseases like cholera, dysentery, and polio. This lack of safe water is the reason for World Water Day, and people can do their part by conserving water and reducing waste.
