All About Water Heaters

There are a number of things to consider when purchasing a new water heater, such as the type of system, level of efficiency, the amount of hot water provided and the cost of installation. Water Heater Little Rock Plumbing

The first and most common type is the conventional gas powered water heater. These heaters run on natural gas and store the water within a cylindrical tank. They have the ability to restore hot water supply at a 40 percent faster rate than their electric competitors, although they waste some energy due to the way they must reheat water that has begun to cool within the tank.

Another type of water heater is the electric water heater. The benefits of this type are that they are cheaper to purchase and install than most other types of water heaters and require very little maintenance. The downside is that they are less energy efficient than other types of heaters.

The most energy efficient type of water heater is the solar water heater. Although these types tend to be more expensive to install, the federal government currently offers a tax credit than can refund up to 30 percent of the cost. Solar water heaters will pay for themselves eventually, sometimes in as little as four years! One major drawback is that the water heater may have trouble operating efficiently in very cloudy climates.

The last type of water heater is the tankless water heater. These heaters may be powered by natural gas, propane or electricity, and can provide an unlimited source of hot water due to their ability to heat the water instantaneously. They are also incredibly energy efficient because they only operate when there is a need for hot water. It is estimated that a tankless water heater can save a homeowner up to 20 percent on their energy bill. One negative is the delay that occures when turning on the hot water faucet. In most cases this delay is not life-altering, but it may bother some people. Tankless water heaters are also not ideal for homes in which large families reside, due to the fact that they are not capable of providing hot water to many different parts of the house at one time.
